wedding inspiration…4 days!
I’ve already read Interpreter of the Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri this month. She’s amazing. I’ve also read The Namesake by her, and I highly recommend it.
Right now I’m reading a Michael Chabon book about Pittsburgh that’s kind of amazing.
Since I’m getting married(!!!!) this coming weekend, I need some honeymoon beach reading. I’m thinking about bringing The Corrections. I bunch of friends were talking about it last night and it sounds amazing. I’ll probably bring one more book just in case I finish the first. Perhaps Dharma Bums by Kerouac or something that’s sure to keep me engrossed. I love books that are all encompassing, that pull you in so much that you begin to think in the author’s voice.
In my previous post I mentioned how important meditation has become to me. It’s obviously something I do at home…not work. However, sometimes I feel the need to be more relaxed, to be able to center myself while at work, but I definitely can’t take 20 minutes to close my eyes and meditate. This website www.positivepause.com is kinda a second best for me right now.
I love writing prompts! Hopefully this will be the first in a series of responses to them.
25 Things I want to do in my life:
1. Get a dog
2. Marry A. (Sorry that “Get a dog.” is #1, Liz.)
3. Have babies!!!!!!! or just one baby. That would be great, too! I love kids—they’re so joyful and inquisitive…and stubborn sometimes, too! :)
4. Read more. Ideally I wish I read about a chapter of a book a day.
5. Get my Masters in Social Work…preferably from Bryn Mawr or Penn.
6. Not lose my passion for social service and people.
7. Buy more food that I know supports local farmers that don’t work for big corporations.
8. Keep up my meditation practice. It’s really helped me to decrease stress/worry.
9. Travel. I want to go to Haiti to do Medical Relief work when Liz is a doctor (you’re cool with this, right Liz?) I also would like to travel around Europe. I feel like I kinda missed out on that during college when a lot of my friends did it. I’m pretty much game to go anywhere…except Alaska…
10. Own a condo instead of a house so we don’t have to deal with maintenance issues.
11. Eat more chocolate cake. Perhaps that’s just because I’d really like a piece right now.
12. See Laura Comstock more frequently!
13. Not regret my tattoos. So far I like them, but only time will tell.
14. Be as supportive as possible of Liz while she’s in Medical School.
15. Stay friends with the people I’m friends with now. They’re awesome and I really think they’re all going to do wonderful things in life.
16. See a National Healthcare system in place in the US. No one should have to do without access to health care in this country.
17. Listen to my Dad finally admit that my tattoos are cool…hahaha… :)
18. See my brother more. He’s a really great person. We talk on the phone quite often, but it would be cool to talk in person, too.
19. Donate a lot of money to The Emma Willard School…if I ever make a lot of money. Social work isn’t really known for its tendency to make you rich.
20. Make it to the beach at least once every summer.
21. Regular pedicures. Regular massages. Some day I will establish this. Like a lot on this list…money is needed.
22. Get Dolce to voluntarily sit on my lap/lay down next to me when I’m not sleeping. Maybe when she’s really old this will happen?
23. Get a bike. Riding a bike makes me feel like a kid again.
24. Walk regularly. It’s soothing. It gets me places.
25.Coming up with stuff to add to this list officially got very difficult many numbers ago! So, I guess I want to figure out more stuff that I want to do. I’d say that’s pretty on par with me.

I take back my previous post. As I’ve thought more and more about Rick Warren and heard some of my friend’s opinions on the situation, I’ve decided to stop viewing Obama’s decision to ask him to give the invocation as a good one. The more thought I give to this subject, the more I realize that Obama is honestly just pandering to a group of voters he needs to win reelection in 2012.
I never thought i would be writing about Mr. Warren. For those of you who are not familiar, he is the author of A Purpose Driven Life and a major player in the Evangelical Christian movement. He is also President-Elect Barack Obama’s choice to give the invocation at the innauguration.
LGBT groups are up in arms about this particular decision. At first I was too. He was a staunch supporter of California’s Proposition 8, after all. However, after thinking it over, I am not so sure if I can wholeheartedly disagree with this choice.
By not choosing a religious figure that perfectly aligns with his views, Obama is seeking to use his inaguration as a means to draw people together rather than divide them. At this event there will be something for most (I can’t say everyone—that is just too absolute). This decision is actually in line with everything Obama spoke about on the campaign trail—bringing the nation together rather than driving it apart. For, even if I don’t agree with everything Mr. Warren espouses, I do agree with some of it—namely, his crusade against poverty.
Do I want the Obama inauguration to be a liberal love fest? Yes, yes I do. I would squeal with glee over it. However, in the long run, it’s much more important to unite the country rather than appeal to a small percentage of people. I strongly think that this choice, coupled with Obama’s many moderate cabinet appointments will do just that.
So, I’m extremely excited about the Obama Victory, but, I have to say, it does come with some reservations…not about Obama, of course, but about state ballot measures.
Arkansas, my home state, has voted by quite a large majority to ban gay couples from adopting or fostering children. Prop 8 is too close to call in California. Also, I saw that Nebraska voted to do away with government sponsored Affirmative Action?!? Crazy.
